The people shall be informed so that they fully participate in the democratic process.

FOIA Request Tips

  • FOIA Requests must be submitted in writing.

  • Describe the record(s) requested in detail so that it can be located

  • Describe the subject matter of the documents requested, and, if possible including dates of the material

  • Some information is exempt from disclosure and may be redacted according to the Michigan Law.

  • The FOIA statue allows the City 5 business days to respond to a FOIA request.

  • An extension of an additional 10 days is allowed under statute for reasons including but not limited to the need to search for, and review a large amount of public records.

For your convenience, the City provides a FOIA Request Form, which is located at the link below. Use of this form is not required, and requests may be in any form of writing (letter, fax, email, etc.). However, please include the words “FOIA” or “FOIA Request” in the request to assist the City in providing a prompt response.

To request a public document, please complete a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Request Form above and submit it to the City Clerk's office mail, email, or fax.
