The City of Monroe owns and maintains two historic cemeteries. Memorial Place, located at the corner of South Monroe Street and West Seventh Street, is no longer used for active burials, and honors the memory of the Kentucky soldiers that fought to defend the original Frenchtown settlement from attack by the British in the War of 1812.

Historic Woodland Cemetery, located on Jerome Street south of East Fourth Street, is the final resting place of dozens of prominent Michigan citizens, including members of the Custer family.

Burials are still occurring at Woodland Cemetery, and these are managed by contract with Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle. Roselawn can be contacted at 734-242-2475.

The City of Monroe handles most maintenance activities for both cemeteries, including lawn and tree maintenance.
