Sidewalks

Sidewalks

The City of Monroe strives to be a walkable community, and a large part of this is achieved through a comprehensive sidewalk system usable by all, including persons with disabilities. While the City’s public sidewalks are generally installed within the public right-of-way, Codified Ordinance sections 625-12 and 625-13 require the abutting property owners to maintain adjacent walks in good repair. Where damage is caused by a City tree, the City will be responsible for the repairs, and any corner ramps are fully the responsibility of the City of Monroe as are any adjacent retaining walls needed to provide for proper grading.

Most years, the Engineering Department will undertake a proactive, comprehensive program for replacement by targeting a geographic area. Over the past three (3) decades or more, this has resulted in approximately an 8 to 10-year cycle of repairs. The Sidewalk Program Flyer describes this program in further detail. However, the Engineering Department also responds to spot complaints in other areas of the City as needed, and will incorporate these scattered sites into the next program area contract as well.

Residents in areas lacking sidewalks that desire their installation should contact the Engineering Department to obtain a petition. New project are normally funded largely through Special Assessment Districts on a frontage basis.
