Spring Road Construction 2019

Warmer weather means construction season and orange cones around the City.  Below are some of the larger scale projects you can expect to see around the City for the next several weeks.

1. NORTH CUSTER ROAD RESURFACING – WEST OF CRANBROOK TO BENTLEY / CUSTER DRIVE

This work will primarily involve milling and resurfacing of 3 inches of pavement. Additional safety enhancements will also be made to the corridor as a part of this project, designed to balance the needs of vehicular and non-motorized users alike.

The pedestrian refuge islands at the Cranrbook and Richards intersections are being removed, and the roadway is being narrowed from 3 lanes to 2, with the width removed from the center turn lane to be added to on-street bicycle lanes in each direction. This is designed both to narrow the effective pedestrian crossing distance of the street, and to remove higher-speed bicycles from the off-street pathway, enhancing the safety of pedestrians in the area.

Additionally, to promote visibility and better control vehicle speeds, the intersections at Cranbrook and Richards are being raised vertically approximately 8 inches, and enhanced crosswalk markings and signage will be installed at these and other intersections.

In general, one lane of traffic in each direction is expected to be maintained throughout most of the project, while occasional flagging of traffic may need to occur during actual milling and paving operations, and the project is expected to last through at least the end of May.

2.  FIRST STREET RESURFACING – HARRISON TO LORANGER SQUARE

This project will include milling and resurfacing of 3 inches of pavement, and spot base repairs when needed.
In addition, the corner brick sidewalk ramps will be replaced in standard concrete and modified for ADA compliance.  Traffic will generally be reduced to a single lane, and there will be a few days where traffic may need to be detoured to Third Street to protect the original brick roadway base when the old pavement is removed before the new pavement is placed.  On-street parking will generally not be permitted during the project.

The entire project is expected to be completed sometime in May.

3. WEST FRONT STREET WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT – TELEGRAPH TO SMITH

E.R. Two-way traffic will be maintained as much as possible during the project, but there will be times when eastbound traffic may need to be detoured, while westbound traffic is likely to be maintained throughout the work with traffic shifts, due to the more complicated detour pattern that would be required.  Eastbound detour routes will vary based on the exact section being worked on, but will include portions of Third Street (when working east of Third), and Telegraph Road, Cooper Street, Kay Lani Avenue, and West Seventh Street (when working west of Roessler).  On-street parking will also be prohibited during the work areas.

The entire project will last through June.
