Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Footbridge Rededication
Mark your calendars to join us on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 6:00 PM for the rededication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Footbridge!
Originally constructed in 1988, the bridge was in need of care after over 35 years of service to the community. In November of 2023, Monroe City Council appropriated $1,420,455 for a rehabilitation project, which included $100,000 support from the Downtown Development Authority for the new lighting installation.
Repairs on the MLK Footbridge were completed this past summer, 2024. This work included repairing the south side steps, concrete patching on both ramps, replacement of the chain link fence, replacement of the wood decking with synthetic decking, and repainting to match the city's branded colors. A new lighting design completes this intimate gateway between St. Mary’s Park and the Downtown shopping district.
Celebrate with us as we cut the ribbon on the newly completed bridge and commemorate 60 years since Martin Luther King Jr. was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Commemoration and ribbon cutting begins promptly at 6:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served.
