River Raisin Survey
The US Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting survey work along the banks of the River Raisin the week of March 21st, weather permitting. The survey and resulting design work, paid for by the United State Environmental Protection Agency, will support the reconstruction of Fish Passage #4 (behind the Post Office).
Engineer staff will be working within 100 feet of the river overbank, which will necessitate venturing onto private property along the shoreline to collect data. Army Corp staff will have hard hats and safety vests for identification.
Fish passages were introduced to the River Raisin as a part of the River Raisin Legacy Project in 2014. Fish passages help to eliminate unnecessary structures and provide passage around, through, or over the low head dams. This improves access to spawning and rearing habitat further upstream for many important species of lake fish, and has opened the lower 23 miles of the River Raisin to Lake Erie.
