Scam Email Alert

The City of Monroe reminds customers to protect themselves and their property against individuals who may be fraudulently communicating as City of Monroe Water Department employees.

There are currently multiple reports of email scams impersonating City of Monroe Water employees seeking to arrange access to resident homes under the guise of changing water meters.

These emails will be unsolicited, and may include names and phone numbers of government employees and be formatted similar to official City communications. Please remember: any official correspondence from the City of Monroe, Michigan, will come from an @monroemi.gov email address.

If an email or communication seems suspicious:

• DO NOT reply to the email or correspond with the scammer
  
• Verify its legitimacy by reaching out to the appropriate department.  Our Water Department can be reached at 734.384.9150.
  
• If it's a scam, mark it as such and delete the email from your inbox
  

Additionally, the City of Monroe wants customers to feel secure when a credentialed City representative visits their home or business. To help prevent imposters from gaining access to customers’ homes, the City urges customers to keep the following information in mind:

• Advance Notice will be provided by the City of Monroe Water Department when scheduling service requests and inspections.
  
• If access is requested for an inspection, ask for City of Monroe credentials before allowing an inspection to occur. City of Monroe employees carry special ID cards. Never hesitate to ask to see proper identification before allowing anyone entrance to your home. Customers are encouraged to closely inspect the identification provided by the worker. If you are suspicious about a person’s ID or activities, do not allow that person into your home and call the City of Monroe immediately at 734.384.9150 so that we can verify the visit.
  
• Check the inspector's vehicle to see if it is a City vehicle displaying a City of Monroe logo, and/or with government vehicle license plates.
  
• Contact the Water Department at 734.384.9150 for questions, to verify the employee identity or if an inspection is scheduled.
